Why You Should Prevent Hypertension (high blood pressure)

What is the point of keeping your blood pressure regulated (read: low)? What does it matter? I'm young. I've got plenty of time to worry about that, right?

Wrong! Here are some reasons to get busy with your blood pressure NOW. Not later.

Increase Your Odds

The younger you are when you change your lifestyle, and consequently, your blood pressure, the more healthy you will be throughout the remainder of your life. You are also far more likely to live longer. Also, the older you get, the more set you are in your ways, and the more difficult it becomes to change lifelong bad habits.

Cut Down On Health Risks

Just controlling your blood pressure effectively (using diet and medication) once you are diagnosed with Hypertension isn't good enough. You still run a greater risk of heart attack, stroke, or developing heart-related diseases if you wait.

Eliminating the headache of BP Control:

Getting your blood pressure under control is one thing. Managing it for the rest of your life is quite another. If you wait until you are older and have the disease, you are looking at a chronic illness that will require diligence and maintenance for the rest of your life. You also run the significant risk of NEVER getting it under control (well over half of Americans with Hypertension have it under poor or no control)

The Side effects

It isn't any fun being permanently on medications to control your blood pressure. There are side effects that will last for as long as you stay on your meds. Fatigue, headaches, constipation, reduced immune system, lingering coughs, and reduced sex drive are all potential side effects arising from blood pressure medications.

Don't Overlook The Cost

While you may be on a first-rate medical insurance plan now, what will the future hold? Treating Hypertension is no inexpensive task. Equipment, medications, and trips to your physician take time away from enjoying life, and cost money - yours and/or other insurance ratepayers. Do you really want that burden for the rest of your life?

Hypertension can be largely avoided by making simple changes in your lifestyle. The three most common ones: stop smoking, eat healthier (more whole and raw foods, less fat and simple carbs, and get regular exercise. The choice is yours.
