What is a Waterspout?

As defined at Wikipedia, a waterspout is a intense columnar vortex that appears over a body of water, It's most often connected with a cumuliform cloud.

It's something like a tornado over water. Two types exist:

Tornadic

These are known as "Tornadoes Over Water" and are formed during a weather process that is similar to land-based tornadoes. If a tornado starts on land and then migrates over water, it is still referred to as a Tornadic waterspout, once it's over water.

Non-tornadic

If a waterspout is not associated with a rotating updraft caused by a supercell thunderstorm, then it is considered to be non-tornadic in nature. It's also known as a "fair-weather waterspout"

These occur in coastal waters and rarely register beyond F0 on the Fujita scale.

Waterspouts present a serious hazard to mariners, aviators, and swimmers in their path. A special type of marine warning accompanies them if/when the National Weather Service catches up to them.
