Weather Phenomena: Raining Animals
Raining animals has been reported in numerous countries of the world and throughout history, but was largely ignored as tall tales. It turns out that it is a fairly common meteorological phenomenon. The animals that are at the highest risk of dropping out of the sky in a rainfall are fish, frogs and toads, with several types of birds at risk as well. Animals can survive the fall. Fish are the most likely survivors. Frogs survive as well, but take some time to get their bearings. One theory regarding "frog rain" is the confirmed incidents of mass migrations of frogs and toads. When severe weather strikes during a migration, they are lifted skyward in large numbers, and come down as rather "heavy" rain, sometimes also in pieces. Birds rain down due to the fact that they are much more vulnerable to big shifts in conditions, being aloft when severe weather hits. Entire flocks get caught up in the winds that are much too strong for them to get out of, and they are at the mercy of the elements, being deposited (sometimes still alive) on hilltops and in trees.
