US Gas Prices In Perspective Americans are notorious for complaining about gas prices. I have to admit, I'll drive on down the road to save another nickel per gallon on a fillup. Lately, with the massive speculative increases in light sweet crude, I've been remembering a trip I took to Europe - the "grand tour" or some such, back in 1973. We flew from L.A. to Amsterdam, tooled out to Haarlem (the OTHER Harlem), and bought a old 850cc Mini Cooper, which promptly wheeled us all over northern Europe sipping fuel at about 55 miles per gallon. The cost? $2.50 to $3.50 per gallon, depending on northern versus southern Europe. Today, I see the gas prices in the U.K. are up above $8.00 per gallon! And here, in America, we are finally catching up to the price I paid in Europe 35 years ago. Adjusted for inflation, gasoline (especially in silly countries like Iran or Venezuela where it sells for under 50 cents per gallon - I think Venezuela is 12 cents???) gasoline is arguably the cheapest commodity in the world. But it's fun to complain. And of course, blame the big oil companies and their 10's of billions of dollars in profits PER QUARTER! They make great whipping posts.

You fail to mention most of the price of a gallon of gas comes from taxes.
