Tips for Renting Boats

Many people only go boating on occasion. Perhaps due to lack of time or lack of commitment to the sport. They only engage in it once in awhile. (maybe they are the smart ones!)

Regardless, casual boating consumers are much better off to rent a boat than they are if they bought one only to have it sit in storage 51 weeks per year,

No insurance costs, no upkeep, no storage, no registration fees. Sounds pretty good, right?

If you are one of these people, you want to ensure that your boating activities are maximized. All boat rental services are NOT created equal, and choosing the right one can mean the difference between a day of joy on the high seas, and an exercise in frustration.

Here are a few tips to help you increase the chances of a successful boat rental experience:

Think Safety

If you don't come home alive, and in one piece, you can't call it a successful outing, right? Ask questions about the safety gear, life preservers, fire extinguishers if it's a power boat, radios, flares, distress gear, etc. Look for Coast Guard approved tags and symbols. When in doubt, ask more questions!

Also, don't overlook providing your own backup - a cell phone, a flashlight, a whistle, some waterproof matches, a knife - these can save your life. Take them!

Other Boat Renting Considerations

Take a first aid kit on board

Bring some basic tools - a 4-in-1 screwdriver, a crescent wrench, some pliers, duct tape, and a few other basic tools go a long way to fixing minor issues and mishaps.

Don't depend on the rental company to supply you with any of this stuff! Be proactive. Plan for it yourself.

Take your own boating experience into consideration. Have you been sailing or motorboating for 30 years? Owned 6 of your own boats? Or is this the first time you've ever set foot on a rolling deck? Take along a more experienced companion if you are unsure. You'll be glad you did if things get dicey.

Also, ask the rental company what their policy is if something happens. Will they come bail you out? (literally) Do they have support staff and vessels? These are good to know IN ADVANCE of anything happening.

The bottom line: Do your homework, use common sense, ask a lot of questions, and Plan Ahead!
