If you are going to enjoy any degree of success online, you need a mentor. Picking one is tough. The size and scope of online mentors is formiddable to the uninitiated. Here are some things to keep in mind, when seeking out a mentor: Access Can you talk to them? Or just their staff. Are they only accessible via forum or helpdesk ticket or e-mail? How much are they around, and how much are they on the road, leaving the real work to subordinates? Downloadable Assets What is the size and condition of their asset library? Is it broad or super-restricted to the marketing arenas they operate within? Audio and Video Do they provide any training or solutions in either audio or video format? Forum What does their community look like? Is it just them, or is there "peer-to-peer" mentoring going on? ie. other students helping fellow students. Courseware Is there self-paced courseware? Few teaching tools are more effective than mastery learning mechanisms that let you set the pace. Particularly if you are working at this part-time, you need to be able to start and stop on a dime. Joint Venture Opportunities What are the prospects for doing collaborative projects with this mentor? Is there a mastermind happening? Group challenges? The opportunity to get together with others and build lists and other online assets? Agenda What is the mentor's agenda? Why are they doing it?
Choose carefully, and a mentor is worth their weight in gold. Choose unwisely, and it's just more money down the drain.
