The Other Side Of Google

Google searching dominates the Internet landscape these days. When a service provider's name morphs into a verb ("just google for..."), you know it's become a dominant player.

Savvy Internet Marketers aside, a lot of people are simply unaware of all the things going on behind that famous search page that displays such clever graphics on holidays. Here's a quick run-down of some of the goodies Google has developed over the years:

Gmail

Google was a bit late to the game of free web-based email supported by advertising, but when they arrived, boy did they! More disk space (way more, initially) kept the other email providers scrambling to catch up. More features, and really serious spam controls, while managing to allow the vast majority of legitimate mail through to user inboxes. Gmail is poised to become (if it hasn't already) THE dominant web-based email provider in the world.

Adwords

This is the advertising tool suite that businesses use to display their ads on other people's web sites. It is an elaborate environment of bids, tracking, and ad management that takes time to master, and can either send your traffic (and profits) into the stratosphere, or your bank account plummeting to earth, depending upon how well you master the medium.

Adsense

This is the opposite side of Adwords. It's for the monetization of web sites, also known as web publishing. Site operators earn money whenever a site visitor clicks on an adsense ad that a adwords business advertiser has bid on, in order for it to appear on that site operator's web site.

Google Images

This is another segment of the google empire involving image hosting and image database management. It is an extensive environment and worth researching if you have image hunting, image retrieval or image distribution needs.

Google Earth

This is a bit of a departure from most of the conventional server-based resources that are the standard services of Google. Google Earth is a desktop application that taps into google databases which present the entire planet earth (well, most of it) for your viewing and "flying" pleasure.

Google Groups

A competitive entry into the wildly popular yahoo groups function, google groups is a similar variant of the long-established newsgroup "NNTP" (network news transfer protocol) that has been around the Internet since before the web was born.

Google Analytics

An increasingly popular tool (free) for webmasters and site operators to track all sorts of traffic on their sites.

Google Checkout

A payment gateway started by Google

Google Desktop

Employing built-in google search for both the Internet and your local hard drive, along with various google gadgetry.

Google Blog and Book Searches

Targeted searches in the blogosphere and of huge book repositories

Google Maps

Googles answer to Mapquest

Google News

A way to search only news sources

Google also owns Blogger and Youtube, so even if the site doesn't say Google on it, it might be!
