The cause of the vast majority of MySQL database setup goofs
Scripts that do amazing things are now readily available with the click of a mouse and a few typed characters. All you need is a web hosting provider that gives you CPanel access equipped with Fantastico, and you're done. Some 50 or so scripts stand ready to go to work for you, and all can be readied in 2 minutes or less. The problems arise when the script you HAVE to have isn't supported by CPanel. Now what? You get to do it (as they say) the old-fashioned way. You EARN IT! copy the files, establish the database, create the user, and run the install routine, crossing your fingers, holding your breath and praying to the almighty script gods that this one will be a pleasant and routine experience. If it's not, there is one little step that oh, SO many novice script installers overlook. It's the very last step in the process, so it's easy to forget to do it. You must ATTACH the database user to the database itself. It's a "Add a User" or if you will, establishing a relationship of the new user with the new database. This "associates" the user with the db. It also grants permissions for the user to do things inside the database. Your script needs to know not only what the database name is, and what the user is but also the user's password. Notice there is NO PASSWORD FOR THE DATABASE ITSELF. The security is all handled by the user name and password. So, if you get curious errors during a script install, suspect this omission first, before calling for help. |
