Ten Hurricane Preparation Tips

1. Build a hurricane kit

- extra cash or traveller's checks (ATMs will be offline, perhaps for days or weeks)
- batteries (don't forget an extra CAR battery, especially if yours is old)
- flashlights and signal flares
- can opener (manual)
- cork screw (wine isn't much fun stuck in a bottle!)
- canned/boxed food (preferably sealed in bags)
- critical medicines like heart meds and insulin
- candles and oil lamps
- an ice box or cooler
- long-term supply of baby essentials

2. Get your insurance house in order - secure your policies and paperwork documenting what you paid for what you own.

3. Animal planning (secure a safe place for your pets, book space in kennel, batten down the barn)

4. Backup Power - generator, batteries, hand-crank flashlights and radios

5. Communications

- Incoming (battery-op or manual-crank radio and TV)

- Outgoing: ham radio, satellite phone and extra batteries.

6. Hide or backup your valuables (think looting)...bury it, hide it out back, safes. consider imaging and uploading critical valuable documents to your web server

5. Plywood and Window Prep - plan ahead - plywood won't be avail 2 days before the storm hits

6. Secure your perishables - important papers, wedding photos and keepsakes, treasures that don't like water

7. Designate A Nerve Center - a place where everyone in your family knows to go. The safest place in your home. Locate your hurricane kit there and make sure everyone knows where it is.

8. Make out-of-town arrangements (a friend, a relative, a hotel booking)

9. If you are stuck at home, Stay indoors and off the roads!

10. Think Leeward (that's sailor talk for DOWNWIND) - as long as you know which direction the storm's full force is coming from, move to the other side (the leeward side) of the house.
