Talking To Your Parents
Call me old-fashioned, but I talk to my parents. Regularly! Maybe it's because I hear from my own kid once a year, if that. Maybe I just enjoy hearing what they are doing. Takes me back. It's comforting. And they LOVE the attention... My dad is nearing 80. He recently discovered e-mail, and now has his little "mailing list" he spams regularly, sometimes daily. I chuckle at the crazy things he sends. Blather about the war. Pontifications about the sorry state of America. Blah blah, but it's fun to see him use the medium. They have trouble with their computer. Regularly. They're too cheap to pay for broadband. Or a second phone line. And since they don't get many calls these days, their phone is ONLY busy, when my dad is busy spamming his 10 odd person "network" LOL. So, I wait patiently. And call again (no voice mail either of course...they won't even pop for cable TV!) He likes to brag about the movies some long-time neighbor brings by, probably because they know my parents don't see many movies (too expensive in the theater, too costly to buy cable) Of course, they think nothing of flying to Europe. Or Hawaii every year. But broadband? Even though it now costs LESS THAN DIALUP? Too scary for them.
