Modern Web Sites: Cutting Loose The Dialup Crowd
Yes, I do believe there has been a veritable RUSH to abandon all those who are on dialup. However, it's inevitable. Audio and video technologies simply don't fit the dialup connection model. Flash and other modern techniques and tactics would never have evolved had it not been for cable, and then later, DSL. Imagine that latest graphics archive of 60 meg you just grabbed off your favorite site if you were still on dialup? Yikes! You would probably have had to cut it up into bite-size chunks and use special download management software that restarted the download every time you lost connection, just to accomodate the file size...remember those days of split files? Developing sites that disenfranchise the dialup population is also something of a FILTERING PROCESS. People tend to forget that the majority of those connected to the Internet who don't bother to obtain high speed are also a lot less likely to buy anything or otherwise be part of the online consumption revolution. There are certainly exceptions (rural areas, for eg.) but even those are disappearing fast. I'd love to welcome dialup members to my membership site, but I have to say they won't be happy... far too much of the technology is simply beyond their ability to consume it. I'm not saying it's any sort of dirty little conspiracy - just the opposite: it's a natural outgrowth of a higher and higher percentage of the Internet consuming population who enjoy a broadband connection. When you are involved in teaching the latest strategies and tactics in the Internet Marketing business, it may be harsh, but my attitude is this: you want to become an online marketer? And you don't have high speed? Move your behind closer to the backbone!! Or, if you're a hermit, get a dish. |
