MLM Types: Which One Is Your Prospect?

When building a big downline, I find it helpful and a whole lot less stressful to put prospects (and downline) into one of these three groups:

1. The Runners

These are the movers and shakers. Some call them "hitters". They want to run fast, jump high, and spend money. They devour every bit of knowledge about the business you can throw at them. Then they ask for more. They come up with creative ways to grow the business, that you or even your upline never thought of. They are the fuel that drives the engine that is network marketing. Without them, the whole industry would blow away in a month.

2. The Small Businesses

These distributors are the backbone of whatever company you are representing. They don't want Uber Wealth, or the 17-room mansion, or to run for the Governorship of their state. They just want to make a few hundred extra bucks per month to cover the kids college tuition, or the shortfall because Daddy bought too big a power boat last summer. They work for their money. They will sometimes stumble across a runner. All too often, however, they don't stay in the business long enough to enjoy the fruits of what that runner produces. Some stay for decades, however, faithfully churning out sales of $50, $100, $200 per month. Month in, month out. The salt of the earth. And the Network marketing business. Just don't expect them to light a huge organization on fire. It's never gonna happen.

3. The Zits

These people are sometimes talked into the business. Or they convince themselves they are ready for it. When, in fact, there is no way they could become successful. They don't have the desire. Or, they see the world in a funny way. They're afraid of people. Or they are distracted by other pursuits. Whatever the reason, they do absolutely NOTHING with the business. They don't buy the products. They won't come to meetings or listen in on any training calls. They aren't students of the game. They aren't even on the sidelines, cheering. They just stay home.

The secret to the Network Marketing business is in recognizing which category each person fits into. Ideally, you want to talk the No. 3 people RIGHT OUT OF SIGNING UP IN THE FIRST PLACE! Tell them to save their money, and their breath. And as they have been saying in the biz for 50 years: WWW - Work With Willing. You can certainly support the No. 2's - after all, they provide crucial business volume. But focus all your energy on the runners. And teach them to do the same.
