How To Survive In The Wild
1. Tell at least 2 people where you are going. If there's a way to register at a ranger station, DO IT! Leave as much detail as you can - what trails, what stops, how long, etc. 2. This is perhaps even more important than number 1, but I can't emphasize enough how important it is to let the world know when you are going and where you are going. Number 2 is TAKE A MLU. Mountain Locator Unit. A good description can be found on wikipedia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mountain_Locator_Unit If you can't get your hands on one of those, buy the watch. 3. Take a knife. And a flint. Matches can get wet (even the waterproof kind) You can run out of matches. A good flint will keep you going for months. 4. Invest in the right equipment. Think shelter. Your clothing, your ability to avoid windchill, your skills at creating a makeshift shelter from rain and wind - all critical to your survival. 5. Watch Bear Grylls. Man versus Wild. He Bear has gone where you are going, watch that one ten times. Memorize it. Then google for Bear Grylls forums and get the low-down on your target area from the masters in that neck of the woods. Just ONE LITTLE TIP could save your life. Do your homework. |
