How to choose a Good Boat Repair Shop

Why use a repair shop in the first place?

- Engine problems

- Electrical problems

- Making improvements to the vessel beyond your skills

- Damage you have sustained

How to pick a good shop

1. Choose carefully

2. You want the best service for the type of repair or improvement you are seeking

3. Ask about the price

4. Find out what the turnaround time is. If it's the busy season, this can be a major factor in your decision. Time is money during the boating season. If you want to use your boat for that huge event next weekend, and it's Wednesday, be prepared to pay a premium for quick service.

5. On the other hand, dont rush it. Take your time. Ask around.

6. Check out the reputation of the shop. If there is an online resource that helps you do this, use it!

7. If you've used the company in the past, find out if your favorite craftsman or mechanic is still on board. There's nothing worse than getting stuck with the new guy, and not knowing about it.

8. Think prevention. Is something bothering you about your current provider? Look around. Unsure a certain shop is up to the task? Do more research. Think you can get a part cheaper somewhere else? Hit Google and dig a bit.

9. Think long-term. Build a relationship with the owner. Is there anything you can do for them? That would cement the relationship and possibly move you closer to the front of the line when you bring your vessel in? Pay it forward!

Matching the shop with the job, and cultivating a relationship with the owners and staff (including outside the work they are doing), can change the equation of having to get your boat worked on from one of stress and horror, to a pleasant experience you will look forward to each time.
