Getting Ready For Hurricane Season

The key to being ready is starting early.

Avoid the stampede on the usual necessities at your local stores and merchants. Everyone ELSE waits until the last minute. DONT!

A great resource is the National Hurricane Survival Initiative

Here are your most critical considerations when getting ready for a hurricane:

Where You And Your Family Are Going To Go

Whether it's a friend, family member or business associate that lives outside the major coastal zone typically impacted by hurricanes in your are, make the arrangements ahead of time. Don't wait until the authorities are blaring evacuation messages from a bullhorn to set about booking a hotel room. It'll be too late. An RV works. But you need to start out early enough.

Securing Your Important Documents

These should be addressed long before a hurricane arrives (even before hurricane season). They include driver's licenses, passports, social security cards, birth certificates, insurance paperwork and other important documents that prove ownership, titles, wills, trust documents - in short, any thing that's important legally or financially. Photos of your possessions are helpful. Don't forget your tax records.

Develop A Hurricane Plan

This includes things like:

* How you will gather your children from school.
* What you need to do to shut down and/or protect your business assets.
* What you will do about important medications you will need while away
* How to protect and secure any pets
* What you are going to do with assets that might be at risks (cars, boats, RVs, trailers)
* Any materials or systems you must deploy to protect your home and other assets

Prepping The Outside Of Your Home

* Remove dead or diseased trees or branches
* Trim overgrown plants
* Clean out all gutters, culverts and other forms of drainage
* Bring everything inside that you can - not just the light items
* Don't scrimp on the plywood
* Remember to brace your garage door
* Tank up any vehicles you plan to move as well as gas cans
* Make sure your swimming pool is full (might want to remove the cover to protect it)

Prepping The Inside Of Your Home

* Make sure all your shutoff valves are functional and accessible.
* Teach every member of your family where they are - especially gas and electrical panels
* Pull the plug on all appliances, particularly sensitive ones like computers, TVs and steros
* Crank up the frig and freezer to their coldest settings
* Consider sending backups of your computer's files offsite (your web server is one option)
* Evaluate everything in your home for risk of water damage and take appropriate steps to reduce the risk
* Identify and/or prepare a "safe room" near the center of your home without windows. A bathroom or closet works well.
* Stock up on these basics: water, food, first aid items, extra clothing and bedding, tools and emergency supplies, and any special items you would need for two weeks.

A Checklist

* Water - A gallon per day, minimum for each person in your family
* Ice and Coolers
* Non-perishable food - canned goods, dried fruits and cereals
* Baby food and Pet Food
* A comprehensive first aid kit
* A radio - preferably a hand-crank and/or a battery-operated one
* Extra batteries for all portable devices
* Personal effects and toiletries
* A complete toolbox
* Duct Tape
* A ladder
* A Portable Generator
* A good Multi-tool (dozen or more functions)
* A few flashlights, including at least one hand-crank
