Flower Gardening For Fun And Peace Of Mind

One of the oldest hobbies in the book is flower gardening. It is also one of the most loved of all activities and engenders fierce loyalty among it's fans. It combines vigorous exercise with a cathartic relaxation that is hard to find in any other activity. You are in a near-meditative state when you garden. It's good for the soul. On top of all that, you add beauty and harmony to your surroundings and loved ones. You also add property value. And a fringe benefit: aromatherapy, through the amazing fragrances put out by flowers and flowering plants.

To begin flower gardening, you need to think long and hard about the space you have available. Where you will position your flowers for maximum impact. A container or a flower bed? Indoors or outside? And the type of flowers is important. If you are a neophyte, consider some easy-to-grow flowers such as marigolds, or petunias and violets. Make sure the soil is right, or you'll need to amend it. Make sure the flowers and the amount of sun or shade are a good match.

Some research is in order:

- How much space do they need?

- What sort of living creatures (animals and insects) are about?

- How much light do they require?

- What are their watering needs?

Some things to avoid:

- Planting at the base of a tree - where it will compete for both nutrients and sunlight

- Planting too close to a fence

- Planting in near-darkness or far too dark an area

Consider the temperature range they'll be in. Each plant does better or worse in different temperature conditions. You can adjust those a bit by changing the location, but do your homework. Don't get into gardening plants that don't go with your neighborhood - it's too much work.

check out your soil. Even if you need to take it to a local nurseryman to have it analyzed. If it's low-quality, you need to work on getting it up to speed with amendments, and particularly natural fertilizers if possible (think Green!) Remember, additions and amendments can only take your growing conditions so far - the better your soil to begin with, the more spectacular your results.

Then the fun begins: the planning and layout. Think about matching the conditions to the flowers (adjust the flower side of things, don't try to tweak the conditions) and you'll be way ahead of the game. A plan that is laid out on paper is almost always superior to one that is "make it up as you go along"

Lastly, keep a notebook. You'll find it almost as rewarding as the gardening itself - having a history of what you did, and how well it turned out.
