Derecho: One Very Violent Windstorm A derecho. What is it? Why should you care? A derecho is a very long-lived windstorm that spreads out over a wide area, and produces extremely violent winds. It is caused by several bands of quickly-moving severe thunderstorms. There are three distinct types: Serial derecho This type comes wrapped in a huge squall, up to 250 miles long, and can contain embedded Tornadoes and Supercell activity. It is associated with a very deep low pressure event. Progressive derecho This is a line of storms, forming in a bow-shape, and continuing on for many hundreds of miles Hybrid derecho This nasty beast is made up of a combination of both the Serial derecho and the Progressive derecho, and occurs during a very deep low, while staying compact like a Serial derecho. Winds must exceed 50 knots to be classified as a derecho. Often occuring in warmer seasons, they tend to effect people who are outdoors the most.
