Beef Up Your Article Marketing Skills

It always amazes me how many want to shortcut the effort required to be effective in article marketing. They buy poorly-written articles on huge PLR membership sites, run articles through text-manipulation software that rarely produces a decent article, and outsource articles to parts of the world that are about as far from Western World English as it gets. Ignore all that nonsense and work on your own skills!

1. Put technology to work for you. Three pieces of tech will put you light years ahead of most article writers. A decent spell checker that you actually use! A good grammar checker (some decent free ones are even online) and a nice thesaurus/dictionary, so you aren't using the same word everyone else is.

2. Don't over think your article. You aren't competing with William Shakespeare or James Michener here. Just get to the writing! If you're stuck for ideas, lean on other writers for inspiration (but don't plagiarize their work). Write like you are talking to an old friend. Speak from the heart. And with passion, where appropriate.

3. Make your article about solutions. People are looking for answers and solutions to problems when they are reading things online. Give them what they want!

4. Think length. Both the length of the article itself (people have short attention spans, so keep it succinct) and the length of your sentences: not too long, but vary them! There's nothing worse than a single run-on sentence, or an article where every single sentence is exactly 8 words. Vary the length. It's powerful.

5. Sleep on your article. I know, I know. The article directories can take forever to approve your article. Forget about that. Remember: this article is going to be on the net forever! So, take the extra night's sleep to recharge your batteries, and have one last look at it before sending it up. You'll be glad you did.

6. Get yourself a decent editor. Sounds complicated - and expensive. It isn't. Even if you are a technical editor yourself, it's extremely difficult to write a perfect article when you are reviewing the material yourself. Find a second pair of eyes. Preferably a good pair. And use them, religiously. Your articles will stand out if you do.

7. Write to inform, not to sell. Sure, you can be thinking of luring the reader towards the author bio box. But, first and foremost, you are there to educate and inform. To provide the reader with value. Think of that first, and selling your own site second, and you'll be ok.

8. Review your article for cohesiveness and completeness. Do all the paragraphs tie together into a whole piece of writing? Does the article flow smoothly? Does it transition logically from one part to the next? Did you leave anything out? You'll be amazed how many pieces you write that will struggle to pass this one step, once you begin to deploy it. (Note: this technique can generate new ideas for additional articles when your own writing strays away from the main topic. Don't forget to capture those ideas!)

9. Be yourself. If you don't try to assume a role that you shouldn't, your writing will be more believable and last a lot longer on the Internet.
