8 Tips When Trying to Secure A Credit Card
1. Use the name you ALWAYS use. If you are a junior, and you use it, keep doing it. etc. 2. If you have less than perfect credit, and some store offers you some, TAKE IT! It might not be the ultimate terms around, but beggars can't be choosers when you are in rebuilding mode. 3. Disclose reasons for past credit issues Corporate downsizing, plant closings, major illnesses - lenders are human too. They respond to people with legitimate reasons for past credit trouble. 4. Beef up your application. Without lying about it, give a "spin" to your job title. This is psychological war your involved in, so pay attention, and adopt a winning attitude. If you have a spouse with spectacular credit, consider a joint application. 5. Time your application. Applying for credit 5 days after you get laid off isn't timing your credit app! It's vastly easier to get credit when you don't need it than when you are desperate. Get some then! Don't apply when you JUST changed jobs, or JUST moved to a new place. Wait! Then pounce, when the timing is right. 6. Borrow from those you have already borrowed from before. In other words, build a history with your lenders. A lender is far more likely to loan to an existing client, who they know, than someone off the street. 7. Avoid all the credit lures and gimmicky nonsense. These will just cost you money in the long run. Go for real McCoy credit: lines of credit, second mortgage on your personal residence, major commercial bank credit card, loans like that. Ignore the rest. They aren't worth your trouble. 8. Read the fine print. What are the annual fees? Are there any monthly maintenance fees? What happens if you need a bit more time to pay? Is there someone to talk to? Are there grace periods or exceptions? Is your rate going to DOUBLE if you are 3 days late? Get the facts FIRST, not after the trouble starts.
